[Faith & Recovery] When Life Falls Apart: How God Lifts Us Up – A Devotional on Psalm 71:20

💔 When Everything Breaks Down, Where Is God?

We all face seasons that feel like the end of the road.

  • When you fail despite giving your all
  • When someone you love walks away
  • When your health crumbles or your plans fall apart
  • When your prayers seem to echo into silence

In those moments, many search the internet with questions like:
“Why does God allow suffering?”
“Can I recover from this place of pain?”

Psalm 71:20 speaks directly into this human ache.

“Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter,
you will restore my life again;
from the depths of the earth
you will again bring me up.”

Psalm 71:20 (NIV)

🌊 God Knows Our Troubles Intimately

The psalmist doesn’t deny the pain.
He says clearly: “You have made me see troubles.”

Even bitter troubles are not outside of God’s knowledge.
And yet, that’s not the end of the story.

He boldly declares:
“You will restore my life again. You will bring me up.”

This is the heartbeat of our hope:
God does not leave us in the valley. He leads us out.

🔄 What Does Recovery Look Like Spiritually?

Many of us have typed things like:

  • “Did God abandon me?”
  • “I feel spiritually dry—what now?”

But spiritual recovery isn’t always about big breakthroughs.
Often, it begins with a quiet, steady return to God’s Word.

Psalm 71:20 reminds us:
Your pain is not the end. It can be the beginning of something new.

🧠 Reflective Prompts to Journal or Pray

To let this verse sink deeper, consider reflecting on:

  • What kind of “deep pit” am I in today?
  • Can I believe that God still wants to restore me?
  • What is one small act of faith I can take today?

You might be surprised how simply writing or praying through these questions brings clarity.
