Biblical Perspective of Social media -A Christian’s Social Media: A Blessing or a Trap?

What does the Bible say about social media, which has become an essential part of our lives today? Of course, there are no direct mentions of Facebook or Instagram in the biblical era. However, the Bible contains rich guidance on human behavior and mindset that are evident on social media. Through these guidelines, we can find wisdom on how to use social media wisely.

1. The Temptation of ‘Boasting’: Humility and Self-Control (Proverbs 27:2, Galatians 6:14)

Social media is the easiest tool for self-promotion. Wonderful travel photos, a successful career, or a happy family life can sometimes become a means of showing off how “great my life is.” The Bible warns against this ‘boasting’ mindset.

“Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; someone else, and not your own lips.” (Proverbs 27:2)

All our abilities and achievements are gifts from God. It would be wiser to use social media as a channel to give glory to God, rather than to showcase ourselves.

2. The Trap of ‘Comparison’: Contentment and Gratitude (2 Corinthians 10:12, Philippians 4:11-13)

By looking at the glamorous lives of others that flood our feeds, we unconsciously compare ourselves. This can lead to feelings of deprivation, jealousy, and discontent, ultimately robbing us of our inner peace.

The Bible emphasizes the importance of being content with one’s life. The Apostle Paul confessed that he learned to be content in any circumstance.

“I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.” (Philippians 4:11)

A social media feed is merely a highlight reel of someone’s best moments. The difficult times behind their glamorous facade are not visible. We must not be captivated by what we see, but rather be thankful and content with the life God has given each of us.

3. The Responsibility of ‘Communication’: Love and Discernment (Ephesians 4:29, James 1:19)

Social media is a platform for communication, but it can also become a place where people hide behind anonymity to hurl thoughtless criticism and slander. We are accountable for every post and comment we make.

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” (Ephesians 4:29)

Our words should be a tool for building others up. Instead of using language of criticism and conflict, we should use words of love and encouragement.

Conclusion: Social Media Is Just a Tool

Social media itself is neither good nor evil. It is merely a tool that reflects our hearts. What we need is wisdom and discernment in how we use this tool. By using social media according to biblical teachings, we can avoid falling into the trap of worldly boasting and comparison, and instead become a light and salt to others.

How about using social media to share the love of Christ, spread the Gospel, and build up community? That would be the most valuable way to use this tool.
